STEP 2: Never keep the title to your boat in your boat. Keep your boat title in a safe, secure, fire proof place.
STEP 3: Keep a record of your trailer registration, boat registration, and serial numbers of your outboard and trolling motors. Keep these records with your boat title. ( Remember you must have a copy of your trailer registration and boat registration with you while you are trailering or on the water, so make a duplicate copy to carry with you and keep the original for your records).
STEP 4: Always lock up your rods, reels, and tackle. If you have lockable storage in your boat take advantage of it, if not take your equipment out of the boat and put it in your house or in a locked storage building.
STEP 5: Put your own personal identifying numbers or letters on all your rods, reels, and tackle bags or boxes. Most of these items don't come with their own serial number so you have to put your own. Make sure that it is permanent and can not be removed easily or without damaging the gear.
STEP 6: Take pictures of your rods, reels, and tackle. Having pictures of all your equipment gives you a visual record of everything you have. You should also keep these pictures in the same place as your title and other records.
IF SOMEDAY YOUR FISHING EQUIPMENT DOES GET STOLEN, HAVING ACCURATE RECORDS AND PICTURES CAN AID POLICE IN RECOVERING YOUR PROPERTY. IT MAY ALSO HELP WITH ANY INSURANCE CLAIMS YOU FILE.
